WHY DO I NEED A BOOT/DATA RECOVERY DISK?
Are you having problems with your computer? It worked before, but now it's gone really slow, or there is a black screen, or your Microsoft Windows operating system won't start up - you have no idea what is wrong with it - is it the software, something you did, or is your computer slowly dying?**
But you have a folder of special photos, and music downloads, or your college work, and all your email addresses, or your business administration is all done on this machine, and you don't want to lose your stuff!
Don't just use the System Recovery Disks you got with your computer, or your Windows disk - they will wipe everything off your hard drive!
All your files are on the hard disk, even if you can't get to them at the moment - and that is what this Boot/Data Recovery disk is for. Put it in your CD drive, it will start up your machine, and, running completely off the CD using a simple, fast Linux-based operating system, it enables you to get to your files and recover them to an external source (like a second hard drive, or a USB thumb drive), without affecting your hard disk in any way. It will get you past any passwords, the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) and any Windows access faults. It works on computers using Windows NT, 98, 2000, XP and Vista.
It also has many other features, such as programs for creating and editing documents, spreadsheets etc, games, image editing software, a calculator and more - it can even enable you to get on the internet under certain circumstances.

How to Use This Disk
The Boot/Data Recovery disk is available as a downloadable file (an .iso file which needs to be burnt as an image to CD before use), or as a physical CD which will be sent in the mail.
Put the CD in the CD drive of your computer, ensure you have set your BIOS to boot from the CD first (to enter the BIOS it is usually Del, Esc, F1 or F2 on start up), turn your computer off and then on again and this CD will start to boot up your machine, taking you through a system test for 5 or 10 minutes, before arriving at a web browser window. Click on the X in the top right hand corner and you will see a screen with a series of icons - click on the Hard Disk icon to bring up your files. There is loads of help on the CD, but it's all very easy - if you have plugged your USB thumb drive in it's just click and drag to save your files. And while you're there, have a look around to see what else you can do.

BOOT CD WILL BOOT EVEN IF WINDOWS CANT
DO YOU NEED A BOOT CD OR A RECOVERY CD?
If you want to transfer data off of a defective windows install or a suspect drive then you need THIS BOOT CD.
If you want to reinstall drivers and clean up your old windows install or even reinstall windows and set it up from scratch then you need a System Recovery CD (NOT A BOOT CD!)
A recovery CD will wipe out all your data and attempt to re-install your system with the use of windows and then install all the setup and factory software, this can include a format of your hard disk. Sometimes a recovery cd will also copy a CD image from a hidden partition to the main partition of your hard disk. A BOOT CD is a completely self contained operating system that resides on the CD and DOES NOT ALTER YOUR HARD DISK IN ANY WAY. It will boot up and independantly allow you to acees your files regardless of the state of the operating system on your hard disk.

If you want to return your machine to the way it was setup at the factory and you dont care about data on your hard drive, then you need a System Recovery CD (NOT THIS BOOT DISK)
If you want to save the data on your computer and take off all your important files first then you need this boot CD!

It is important to keep in mind that even if your windows is completely broken, and wont start, most of, if not all of your data is still on your hard disk.
This boot disk is designed to get you to your data when Windows just wont work.

2) You are seeing a blue screen or error messages like NT loader missing

Before you try to use a boot cd remember that you need to make sure your system is setup to boot from a CD some brief instructions follow (but all sytems vary slightly)
If the PC boots from CD-ROM just put the cd in and you should have a recognizable useful windows type interface in a few minutes.
Many BIOSes have the capability to boot from CD-ROM but aren't configured for it.
In this case you might need to restart the PC and enter BIOS setup or BIOS features by pressing Delete or another hardware-specific key on start-up.
When you configure the boot medium remember that it doesn't have to be the CD-ROM exclusively or even first .. it's fine to sequence a floppy drive before the CD-ROM.
All you need is to ensure that the CD-ROM is present as a recognized boot source.
Save the new configuration and you should be ready to start.
RESCUING DATA FILES
Usually the first problem is to be able to take the data off of the hard disk that has the issues. onto a new hard disk or burn them to a CD or DVD
Failing that you can copy the files you need to a USB key - thumb drive or what ever you like to call it!

THIS BOOT CD WILL NOT WRITE ANY DATA TO YOUR HARD DISK SO YOUR DATA IS SAFE
This is important as any other boot cd that writes to your hard disk will destroy the data on your hard disk!!
